Early Events in 2023

January's Events 2023

The Section’s 2023 events programme was launched on Sunday, 8 January, with our first Winter Talk.  Although a typical January day, the event was well attended with some of us even turning up on bikes! Terry gave us an entertaining presentation about his trip to Bhutan last year. For those not familiar with Bhutan, it’s a small Kingdom situated in the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas, neatly squashed between India and China. The photographs, maps and data gave us a fascinating insight into its culture, roads, and food. Our thanks go to Terry for a fascinating presentation.
January also saw the Section’s annual chilly visit to The Milbury’s for the Southern Section Skittles ‘Competition’.  With restricted numbers compared with previous years, the event was a great success allowing each ‘competitor’ 3 rounds and a knockout competition.

The final event for January was an inaugural social weekend with an overnight stay at the De Vere Horsley Estate in Surrey.

February Talk

There was a good turn-out of bikes in the car park, even outnumbering the cars, for our second Winter Talk. Nigel Tailyour and his wife gave us a very interesting presentation entitled, ‘Wrinklies Around the World’.

His slide show illustrated some of the sights and events they had witnessed as they regaled us with both the facts and the hiccups encountered. They started at the North Cape in Norway, travelling back through Western Europe followed by a long trip through Russia, culminating in the gear box on their ageing BMW dying.
Deciding that the bike had finally reached the end of its useful life, they gave it away to a Russian guy who has since managed to repair it. No longer having any transport, Nigel and his Wife made their way to their next destination, Canada and America, using various trains and planes. Wanting to explore the American continent, they bought another bike and travelled across the country before finally selling it at the end of the trip. They made many friends on the way and, as they said, age is no barrier for adventure.
A collection was made for support Nigel’s charity, The Portsmouth branch of the Samaritans.

Bikes outnumbered cars at the second Winter Talk!
